Once you select to Join with computer audio, zoom crashes along with the windows audio service stops. The issue seems to have started with the Realtek Audio driver 6.
I was able to confirm it continued to happen on these versions. Users are on the latest Zoom using auto-update. The trouble seems to be it's hard to reproduce so we never know if it's fixed. You'll think that a new driver does the trick until it triggers again. Keep an eye out for users reporting the issue on that downgraded driver. I recommend opening a case with Dell so they can escalate to the Advanced Resolution team.
My next thought is that rolling back Zoom from 5. We're going to swap out some of these new laptops with competitors' devices as we can see this is going to be a long crawl through support territory with Dell.
We've had inexplicable issues with our Dell Latitude laptops and the folks who heavily use Zoom execs. This exact same thing is happening and we've been at our wits end. We've tried literally everything. I was able to fix it by simply disabling and enabling the realtek microphone array for one person, and the other person's mic actually worked when the mic was DISABLED! No idea why. These are probably very unstable, nonpermanent fixes, so also ordered external mics for those users.
The other person's doesn't work no matter what I do! I have a ticket in with Zoom that just got escalated to their engineering team so will report back there. The problem is that once the issue occurs, the mic won't work for other programs either. How frustrating! I've got users who have the onboard Realtek array go completely dead. Nothing comes through the microphone in the 'Sound Settings' until I reinstall the driver, or delete the audio device from compmgmt.
The folks with headsets seem to have the microphone go dead at the same as the onboard. I've got a machine right now E on 6. This is the version that support. At this point, I'm convinced it's intermittent across many versions. The hard part is that all of the testing is happening with real people who need to get work done on these calls. The next best thing might be trying to capture the event with Procmon in an effort to further help the vendors isolate where this interaction is happening.
Guess what? After tickets open with everyone, Zoom engineering team provided this response - Microsoft is releasing a hotfix for this problem at the end of Sept! Big relief! Unfortunately the suggestion of rolling back drivers did not help all the users, but we have alternatives until this hotfix is released. Wanted to let everyone know. Thanks, fixfinder for helping us all work together! Hi Katie, Apologies for the inconvenience. Realtek since it impacts us on various drivers going back ways. I've also ruled out the update as I have devices on the May build If you ping me, I can provide you a case for correlation if they're not able to find it.
The 1st few times I called, I got zero help on this from support. They didn't know of anything that could cause it. I then discovered the event logs realizing that Zoom was the aggressor.
As for how to reproduce it, I still can't do that, which makes it hard to nail down when it's truly fixed! I've joined a ton of Zoom meetings in an effort to test with no solid results. Let me know if you get that part of it sorted. I'd love to experiment more without using the employee as a canary.

Solved: Zoom may be crashing RealTek Audio Process - Dell Community

I have spent a chunk of money on my new laptop, and not impressed so far. MiaVision I'm also curious if this was resolved as I'm having the same problem as NeilM-F4L and am pulling my hair out trying to fix it. It doesn't seem to matter whether I use the laptop's internal microphone, or what type of port or headset I've used - I've been told my audio is cutting in and out. This doesn't seem to happen in MS Teams for me, only in Zoom.

I ran into the same problem on my XPS laptop. Here's a solution that seems to have worked for me--although I've done limited testing of it.
I went to the Windows Control Panel and then to the Sound settings. There I found a "Communications" tab with the description, "Windows can automatically adjust the volume of different sounds when you are using your PC to place or receive telephone calls.
I surmise that Windows was interpreting the Zoom meeting as a telephone call and automatically lowering the volume level. Sorry, it was just a temporary solution. Every time I restart the laptop, the problem comes again. Hi FANS, I posted this more detailed solution last month, but it's in a different thread, not the one you've used.
I've copied it here. Step 1. Step 2. Others in the Community have noted that step 2 above means the laptop won't recognize headphones. In my case, as a teacher, correcting the sound level on Zoom is far more essential, since I need it for my online classes, so I'll grudgingly put up with the headphone inconvenience for now. Please note, when I first encountered this low-volume-in-Zoom issue a few months ago, I applied only Step 1 above - and all was well.
To my horror, just in the last week, that suddenly no longer worked - I don't know why - but by adding Step 2 the problem is solved. I do notice that several auto-updates have come in, which may have upended everything, thus necessitating Step 2. To even get to Step 1 above, I was on the phone with Support for hours, and frankly it was only in this thread that I ultimately found helpful advice.
